Where My Passion Grew

Welcome! I’m Meg, a mom, wife, educator, traveler, and SEL Specialist. While teaching in an inner-city school, a co-worker invited me to apply for a professional development session at the Greater Good Science Institute for Educators at UC Berkeley. The inspiration for me applying to the program was that I saw the effect that yoga had on the students in the Baltimore School District.

I applied, was accepted, and attended. That was 2017, it was transformative for my teaching practices and my life. After spending a week in Berkeley and San Francisco, my partner met me and we set off on a two week long road trip to Yosemite and the Pacific Coast Highway to Seattle.

A New Beginning

I began implementing what I learned into my teaching practices. In March 2018, I began my doctoral degree in Integrating Technology, Learning, and Psychology, with my focus on SEL and STEM. Additionally, I began attending professional development in Makerspace. The goal was to blend the two together.

In October 2019, I became a mom and four months later the world shut down. Luckily I was able to stay home with my child until they were almost two. Being back in the classroom I realized what students are lacking in terms of SEL because they were not able to have normal social experiences in a post- COVID world.

My Goals

So here I am, my passion for social-emotional learning led me to embark on this incredible journey. As a devoted teacher, I’ve witnessed the transformative power of SEL in the lives of young learners. From boosting self-esteem to enhancing interpersonal relationships, I’ve seen these skills work wonders. Now, I’m on a mission to share this knowledge and make SEL more accessible to children.

I firmly believe that education extends beyond traditional academics. It’s about nurturing the hearts and minds of our future generation. My research and extensive experience have shown me that emotional intelligence and social skills are as vital as any subject taught in school. These skills not only promote well-being but also pave the way for lifelong success.
